Inner Vibration is a collection of instrumental pieces composed while working on "Gilgamesh". The majority of the pieces blend electronics and orchestral instruments as in the title piece. "Baalbek" imagines ancient people coming upon the city's majestic columns at night. "Fra Angelico" is a simple, lyrical piece for violin and synth; it was inspired by the artist's "Annunciation" at San Marco. "Fin de Siecle" samples antique turn-of-the-century pianos with an added glock, synth and wordless soprano vocal-- all with a dreamy feel. "Voices at Mashum" began life as a Gilgamesh sequence for narration but quickly evolved into its own territory. It cannot be used for the opera but is part of the "Gilgamesh" ecosystem nonetheless. "Nocturne" is a gentle piece inspired by the silhouette of a beautiful woman at night dancing. "Metro Magico" is for a rather jazzy orchestra. "Promenade No. 2 (Coronado)" is a memory of my home in San Diego, driving past the Coronado Bridge and walking around the hotel and beach there (where the Billy Wilder movie "Some Like it Hot" was filmed). "Murano Dream" is a short piece for strings reflecting the working of the famous glassware from Venice. "Kew Canto" is an Alice-in-Wonderland tale that takes place in Kew Gardens in London. Our Alice takes us through a mystical universe enclosed in the gardens on a foggy day where anything can emerge from the fog. "The Perforated God" is a highly experimental work based on the idea of a broken, submerged god (inspired by the Enuma Elish-- the Mesopotamian creation story). What sounds would bubble up to the surface from this perforated god? A piece with no rules and where anything can happen. "Todesfuge" won the Silver Medal at the Global Music Awards in 2020. It takes a recording by Paul Celan reading his very powerful poem on the experience of living in a Nazi labour camp during WWII and adds a piano trio and certain sound effects. "Adrift" ends the album in a more serene mood.
